I learnt cycling when I was at age 8 years old. My dad (I call him Papa) taught how to ride bicycle using half peddle. At that time we did not have camera so I do not have any pics. But I found one photo on flickr.com which I have attached for reference .

(This is not me.)
Earlier at my home cycle and MyTwoLegs was the only two commute that I could use. This is how I started learning and helping my family. Mom (Mummy) said "beta aata pisaa kar le aao", "beta mehmaan aayein hai chaypatti le aao" I used to go half-peddle by my bicycle.
Let me tell you why this half peddle bike riding was invented:- Earlier we, middle class family, did not had luxury to buy bicycle for all ages like 12", 14" etc. As a small kid we didn't want to wait until our legs started to reach peddle while seating on bicycle seat. At that time, I used to ride same bicycle as my father. Bicycle size was 26". So our earlier generations had developed half-peddled bicycle ride. They say it "Necessity is mother of invention"
After few months, when I became tall enough to ride bicycle while seating at bicycle seat, I had started cycling the way you know.
